Reflections on Term 1

Reflection on term 1 Juliette Lawlor

I thoroughly enjoyed term 1 of  transition year. I made many new friends that I had never had the opportunity to get to know before. I have also learnt many things about myself such as the limits I can push myself to and how hard I can work. In a way this term has been a wake up call for the next two years as it has given me a taste as to what the leaving cert is going to be like.

The activities I was involved in this term were the school hockey team where we had many wins, the show ‘the sister act ‘where I stepped out of my comfort zone and performed as Joey in front of the school community. This was a big jump for me as I have never been involved in a  musical before. I was also involved in organising underage hockey and camogie blitzes for the first and second years. We organised many blitzes including an away blitz in Bandon Grammar school.

The best parts of this term were the surf trip to Inchydoney. We walked to Inchydoney beach which was great craic on its own with music blaring and everyone laughing together. When we arrived at the beach we built sand sculptures which got very competitive and played soccer with the teachers while the other half of the group did the surfing. Another day we returned to the beach again and our group did the surfing. I enjoyed it so much and the hot chocolates afterwards were an added bonus. The victory match we had against Bandon grammar school was also a highlight of the term. We all worked together as a team and beat them 2-0. The show ‘the sister act’ was probably the most enjoyable part of this term. From rehearsal after school to the excitement on the night of the performance I enjoyed every second. Although it was stressful at times it all came together in the end and I was so happy to have been a part of the experience. My work experience in Kilmeen National School was also a very enjoyable part of this term.I was helping the infants with their schoolwork and got a real feel for teaching. I'm not sure if it is for me but I did enjoy working with children and would definitely like to go into a career associated with that. It was a very beneficial experience overall. If I had to pick a low of this term it would be not putting as much effort as I could have into my schoolwork.

My aims for term 2 are to try harder in the schoolwork aspect of TY, socialise outside of my immediate friendship group more, get involved in every single activity that comes my way and to try and make the most out of this term. I am looking forward to all the new modules this term such as maintenance and service as I am learning to drive this year and this module will help me alot. The modules I enjoyed last term were filmmaking and child development. I thoroughly enjoyed seeing all the work that goes into producing a movie and the behind the scenes work of film production. I am looking forward to the great year ahead of me.

Term 1 Reflection  Kate Llewellyn

In term 1 of Transition Year I took part in multiple school activities. I joined the school hockey team. I participated in BT Young Scientist and prepared my project for the competition with my team. I had Home Ec as a module at the beginning of the school year where I cooked a different meal each week with my partner. I designed a kitchen in the textiles module also. In Filmmaking with Mr.Browne we wrote and produced a new version of the popular movie ‘Mean girls’. This project was fun to do with my peers and I learned time management skills and communication skills.

In sustainability I learned about bees and the different kinds with Mr. Barry. We also planted daffodils and got rid of weed growing behind the school. I liked learning about bees as I find their lifestyle and work ethic fascinating.

In child development I did a slideshow on how young children with autism develop throughout their years. This was relevant as we also got a talk about autism awareness and how people with autism like to be treated and the year was educated more on the disorder. I found this talk relevant as Clonakilty makes an effort to be autism friendly for example in SuperValu.

In mini company I created a business with my peers. We named our company Drifted and we met up every week to make the product. In school we promoted and advertised it to students and teachers and took orders. I learned skills in finance , communication, time management and social. We ended up making a profit in our company at the end of the term.

At the end of term I went to Maxphysio as my work experience for 5 days. There I learned more about a career in physiotherapy and how I could study to go into it.

I enjoyed term 1 as I kept busy and took advantage of the opportunities given to me by the school. I feel I have benefitted from the experience and that I started my transition year journey off well.
