Reflection on Term 1

Reflection on Term 1

Honestly going into TY I had the mindset that this was going to be a laid-back doss year but it is quite the opposite, TY has so much to offer. I found this out on Induction Day when there were many competitions and courses offered to us, such as First Aid, Gaise and much more. I decided to sign up for the Certified Irish Angus Beef Competition which Cáit O’Mahony, Sinéad Kingston, Nicole Sweetnam and I have since made a video and made it through and completed the interview part of the competition.

Another option that we got to pick was to do Junk Kouture, Mini Company, GAA Leadership and YSI. I decided to go with Mini Company and I definitely do not regret it. It was strenuous to come up with an idea that would be successful, we, Ciardha McCarthy, Cliona O’Brien, Aoife O’Mahony, Grace Murphy and I, decided to make beaded necklaces. Although we weren’t too confident in the idea at first, but with a lot of time and hard work we have since become very successful by selling 216 necklaces at Trade fair and getting over 150 more orders.

My goals for Term 2 are to complete and give out all the orders for Mini-Company, pass my Theory Test and complete the Look into Law Programme.

Thuylane Labiche  Reflection on Term 1

Friday, September 1, start of the first term.  A term full of discoveries and adventures.  It was during this term that everything fell into place like friends, benchmarks and habits. The Transition Year is a rather special year for Irish students ,allowing us to discover more activities than the other years.

The first modules we had were literature, lift program, computer science, music, business and art out there.  All these modules were very interesting.  Through literature, I was able to enrich my English vocabulary despite the fact that it was not easy because it was my first weeks.  Lift Program was also very rewarding because it teaches us some basics that we can use later in our future.  How to present yourself well and present a project well.  Skills that I think can be found in all varieties of profession.  Computer science was a subject that allowed me to enrich my skills in useful areas such as Python, programming that will follow me until my graduation certificate.  I also really enjoyed the music and art lessons.  The business classes were one of my favourite classes because I found what we learned very very interesting and enriching!

In the second part of the term we had different modules which were child development, film making, sustainability, economics and home economics.  All very interesting subjects, the development of the child and something very important that is rarely talked about.  Film making was one of the subjects that I enjoyed the most despite the fact that we didn't have a lot of classes for several reasons. It was the same for the economics class, it seems to me that I only had 2 classes.  The home economics class was awesome!  We cooked some meals which were unheard of for me at school !

It was a term that allowed us to do activities that were a little less academic but which made it possible to strengthen the cohesion between the students, to strengthen our teamwork.

The two team building days left me with very good memories, the first day we built sand sculptures as a team.  Even though we didn't win, it allowed me to make more friends and strengthen the bonds with those I already had.  On the second day, we surfed, it was really great.  In addition, it was very sunny and there were nice waves.

A few weeks later we had the develop me workshop.  Very interesting activities were proposed to us.  It was thanks to activities like this that we sometimes realised the value of teamwork and the fact that helping each other was very important, even more than we think.  The first activity was presented as a giant board game in which several teams compete in order to survive as long as possible without running out of reserves, whether in food, water, fuel, survival equipment... No team started with equality but nobody wanted to share with the other teams, I thought it was a bit unfair, but it was kinda the same rules as in real life.  No one is equal and rare are the people who want to share well at the risk of themselves becoming in difficulty.

During the religious education class we had the opportunity to learn a few things about Irish Sign Language.  It was really a very good initiative, I really appreciated it. On October 22, 2021, I had my first school Halloween, because it's something we don't celebrate at French schools.  It was really really fun because everyone was involved, students, teachers, school staff… The costumes were all very pretty, it was a beautiful day!

To close this text, I would say that it was a term rich in emotions and laughter.  A term that required me to discover a lot of things!  I am very grateful to be in this school and to have met all the people I have met so far Thank you !
