Welcome to SHSS Alumnae Link!

This is where we catch up with past pupils and find out what they’re up to now.

This week we linked with Emma Scully who graduated in 2017.

SHSS Alumnae Link Questions

Name and position:

Emma Scully , Artist.

Lives:

Dublin.

Best memory of Sacred Heart:

The one that sticks out the most is when I tried spray painting for the first time in Art Class. Long story short, it didn’t go to plan, and I ended up accidentally spraying my entire face/ hair/ eyes/ uniform bright blue. It wouldn’t come off and I was part smurf for a few days. Coincidentally Sports Day happened to be on that week and, as luck would have it, our year's colour that year was blue!

What were your favourite classes?

Art & Biology. I was seriously considering studying biology after school and even got a place in CIT, but after doing a PLC in Art, I knew it was the way I had to go!

Tell us about your career progression to date:

I graduated with a 1.1 in Fine Art from the National College of Art & Design. Following my degree show exhibition I was awarded the Graphic Studio Graduate award and the Fire Station Artist Studios sculpture residency.

At the moment, I spend my days between working on my own new etchings and sculptures, and working at Stoney Road Press which is one of Ireland's leading Fine Art Publishing & Editioning houses. I get to work closely with some of Ireland's most well known artists and edition their work. We then bring the artworks that we produce to Art Fairs all over the world including places like New York, Miami, Seattle and London. It’s a very exciting job!

I have my own studio in Dublin City where I continue to work on new projects and work towards exhibitions. I am living my dream and I couldn’t be happier with how it’s going!

If you weren’t in the job you have, what would you be doing?

I don’t think I could be anything other than an artist, but perhaps if I wasn’t making a living, I could also see myself as a curator!

Advice you would give your teenage self:

Read more, draw more, paint more. Stop worrying so much about what people think about you, everyone is far too busy thinking about themselves.

Favourite quote or motto?

a) Everything always works out in the end, and if it doesn't, it’s not the end.

b) Do it now, the conditions are always impossible.

What is your hidden talent?

I can do the worm & I still play the tin whistle.

Huge thanks to Emma for taking the time to answer our questions!

See you soon for the next instalment of SHSS Alumnae Link!
