SHSS Alumnae Link - Cára Donovan

Welcome to SHSS Alumnae Link!

This is where we connect with past pupils and find out what they’re up to now.

This week we linked with Cára Donovan who graduated in 2017.

Name and position:

Cára Donovan. I am currently a final year accounting student at Munster Technological University. I will hopefully graduate in October 2021.

Lives:

Clonakilty.

Best memory of Sacred Heart:

One of my many favourite memories of Sacred Heart is dressing up and singing to the teachers in the Ref in sixth year. It was such a lovely atmosphere while having all the teachers and the whole year group together.

What were your favourite classes?

My favourite class had to be Ms. O’Donovan’s accounting class. I knew straight away in Transition Year that I would love accounting and this class gave me the perfect foundation for my college degree. We also had a really small class and we all got on really well.

Tell us about your career progression to date:

I started in CIT in September 2017 as an undergraduate student studying a Bachelor of Business. I was unsure as to whether I would enjoy accounting at a college level or whether I would prefer to be in a managerial role, so I chose a general degree. That gave me a year to decide. In first year, I got to try a range of modules from accounting to business to marketing. By the end of first year, I knew accounting was the way forward for me and I haven’t looked back since. In November, I received an award from CIT for my academic results for 3rd year. I was delighted to receive this award and it was great to see that all my hard work was worth it. I completed my work placement from January to August, 2020, with a company called VMware. Once I complete my final exams, I am delighted to be going back there for another three years during which time I also hope to complete my accounting exams.

If you weren’t in the job you have, what would you be doing?

I always loved the idea of becoming a Montessori teacher.

Advice you would give your teenage self:

Cherish seeing your friends every day and stop wishing to grow up. Looking back now, I couldn’t wait to get out of school and go to college, to move out and be an “adult”. Now, I wish I could go back for one more day for lunch in the prefabs with all my friends.

Favourite quote or motto?

“What’s for you won’t pass you”

What is your hidden talent?

I’m good at remembering song lyrics, but useless at singing. Singing out of tune is definitely a talent I have mastered!

Huge thanks to Cára for taking the time to answer our questions.

See you next time for the next instalment of SHSS Alumnae Link.
