STEM workshop for TY syudents
On Tuesday, 12th February, the students in Mr Pegler’s physics TY class participated in a work shop organised by the STEM Department in CIT. Here, the students were put into groups and were asked to complete various fun activities together.
They were first informed about STEM and the subjects involved. The first task was to think of different uses for different household objects. The answers could be as crazy as you like. The second activity involved brainstorming, sketching and then designing a prototype of an object. The students could use cardboard, technology devices, pipe cleaners, play dough and various other materials to make these prototypes.
One group made a ring and a watch designed to assist elderly people when they fall. Another group made a train which transported rain water around parks to water plants that were not getting enough water. The last group designed an app used to monitor electricity use in schools.
Everybody enjoyed this workshop immensely. It allowed the students to use their imaginations while solving real life problems.
