UCC Prep For Med School Day
UCC Prep For Med School Day
On Friday the 25th of January, I travelled to the Brookfield Health Sciences Complex in UCC for the Prep For Med School Day. I was accompanied by Meadhbh McCarthy, and Ms. Lucey. We registered at 8.30 in the foyer. We were given an introduction ,and then split into groups for our tour of the campus, and activities along the way. We got a tour of the flame labs, and a small introduction to Biology, and parts of the human body.
We spoke to current third year students about the course and their experiences and advice. We got to do a urinalysis and CPR training. We were taught how to bandage wounds correctly, how to use an epipen, and how to read a vitals machine to monitor blood pressure ,and heart rate.
We got a lunch break with all the groups in the cafeteria, and then we got on a bus to CUH. We were brought into a lecture hall in CUH and different staff members in different sectors of the hospital gave talks. We got a talk from the head of the forensics department about autopsies, a paramedic about the emergency services ,and a midwife about gynaecology. We also got to see a live c-section take place, which was a great experience, and a very generous offer from the couple who had the baby to let us all share that special moment with them.
It was a great experience as a TY student to see what it would be like to study medicine in the future, and to have insight into the different types of careers within the healthcare industry. I am very grateful to have been given the opportunity, and I would recommend it highly to any future Transition Year students if a place becomes available in theMini Med Course 2026.
