UCC Philosop Debating
Well done to Transition Year student ,Sophie Bell, and Fifth Year student ,Arianna Cullinane who participated in the Philosop Debating in UCC .
The UCC Philosophical Society, commonly known as the Philosoph, is the largest debating society at University College Cork, Ireland. The Philosoph was founded in 1850, making it the oldest society at UCC.The UCC Philosophical Society is a forum designed to facilitate democratic debate.
On Thursday, February 22nd, students Adriana Cullinane and Sophie Bell travelled to UCC to take part in the UCC Philosoph Debating Competition. They arrived at 6, ready to go for 6.30. They were debating the motion "Euthansia should be legalised". The debate consisted of sixteen people from a wide range of Munster schools, with eight people proposing and opposing. Adriana opened the debate with her speech as speaker one for the Proposition, highlighting the right of bodily autonomy. She was followed by the first speaker for the Opposition, and so on. Sophie spoke as speaker nine, or the fifth speaker for the Proposition, using rebuttal and refutation. The debate wrapped up at half eight, after a truly interesting and thought provoking discussion. After the adjudicators left and came back to announce their discussion, it was announced that Sophie was one of the three students continuing to the next round. (Sophie Bell).
Well done Sophie.
