First Aid
On Monday, a group of Transition Year students completed a one day First Aid Course covering the basics of what to do in an emergency. This included CPR and bandaging, treating bee and wasp stings, nose bleeds, seizures and measuring heart rate. We learnt about what to do in an emergency, observing the person from a distance to understand the signs, and learning the acronym A.B.C, (Airway, Breathing and Circulation). We all performed CPR. There are 30 compressions in a cycle of CPR and 100 to 120 have to be completed in one minute.
We performed the recovery position. It involves moving a person onto their side to protect the airway.
We gained an understanding about the different bandaging techniques making slings using triangular bandages for arm injuries. We learned to make elevation slings, to control bleeding and arm slings for injuries. We also created slings using scarves and ties proving it is possible to make bandages out of everyday items.
Everyone received a certificate upon completion of the course.First Aid is very beneficial as it provides us with the skills for whatever situation we may encounter in the future.
Thanks to Martina Lyne of Firstaid4schools who delivered the course.
