Autism Training

' We are a group of transition year students who at the beginning of the year received a talk from members of AutismFriendly clonakilty, and decided to sign up and become a part of the SHSS Autism Friendly Committee. Throughout the year we have, and are working towards making Sacred Heart a more inclusive and progressive environment to learn in. We want everyone to feel comfortable and safe at our school

On Friday, April 8th,we presented a training course to all the 4th year classes. We want everyone to become more aware of different peoples needs and requirements, that people with autism have, and this training did just that. We hope everyone had fun and learnt something new! '

Saoirse Frank, Aimee Mulcahy, Alannah Sexton and Robyn Mulcahy.

Below are some of the points discussed during the presentation .

• Autism is an invisible disability ….you don’t know who has autism by looking at a person

• People of all ages and races can be autistic

• It affects people in different ways.

• 1 in 65 people have a diagnosis of autism

• Some people forget how to communicate as a result of being autistic

• Sensory environments all have some level of SPD such as bright lighting or loud music

• People with autism may use stimming. They can wave their hands or twist a piece of hair. It helps them cope with their everyday life.

• Autistic people make up 1.54% of consumers

• 54% of autistic people feel socially isolated

•  Communication is a big barrier with autistic people .They may have difficulty in taking in information and need processing time to understand. Autistic people can experience information overload. Therefore , it is important to use simple language. …No slang or metaphors .Try to use literal language and avoid sarcasm. It is important to say the person's name before speaking to them.Avoid asking too many questions.
