PE EXPO
PE EXPO…Alanah O Donovan, Jane Beechinor, Tea Cronin
Our project is called 'Would you like to go out with a Bang'. The members of our group include Alanah O'Donovan, Téa Cronin and Jane Beechinor. We investigated the physiological effects of caffeine ,and energy drinks, by measuring the heart rate, blood pressure, and temperature of a participant before and after consumption of the drinks. We used drinks such as Coffee, Monster, Lucozade and Red Bull. We carried out this experiment by testing female students aged 16 for a total of 10 weeks. Our hypothesis was that a tester's vitals ,(their heart rate, blood pressure and body temperature), should increase as a direct effect after consuming energy drinks . After completing our experiment, we then decided to do it a second time. This time we had 40 participants. We waited a longer duration ,of 40 minutes ,and we had all the drinks at room temperature.
We first entered our project into BT Young Scientist competition 2022. It was a great experience and we learned a lot from the judges. We then entered the project into PE XPO which took place in DCU on the 6th April. We travelled to Dubin by train. We then got a taxi to DCU.We arrived in DCU and set up our posters and books. We were interviewed three times Before the awards ceremony we were interviewed again by three more judges together. They all seemed very interested in our project and wanted to know more.
We displayed our stand with posters, pictures, information on our project, smoothies that could be used as an alternative for energy drinks and books that the judges could read through and find out more on our experiment.
When they called our names out for the prize, we could not believe it. We are so grateful for everyone who helped us along the way. We would like to also thank our teachers, especially Mr. Cronin and Ms. Holland.
