My Robotic Experience…Niamh Dineen
Robotics is a lunchtime club Mr Kiely set up back in October. As soon as we stepped into the door of the computer room, we were introduced to the world of cogs and gears, and also coding. This world was completely new to me. We were told all about the VEX Robotics Competition, how we can actually build a robot to compete against other robots. It was an exciting concept, it still is.
On the 8th of April, we had the opportunity to put this concept into action as we performed in a VEX Robotics practice event in Kinsale. We played against many schools, including Glanmire Community College and Kinsale Community School.
The students involved were Sinead O'Mahony, Emma Hayes, Téa Cronin, Claire Foyle, Orla Whelton and Niamh Dinneen.
The last time we went to a scrimmage, the robot was different to what it is today. There are now claws attached, which is a big game changer for us! We played six matches that consisted of a minute driving controlled period and a 15 second autonomous period. The object of the game is to attain a higher score than the opposing team.
These matches were the perfect opportunity for the drivers of our team,Téa Cronin and Claire Foyle. They had the chance to practise navigating the robot around the arena, and to practise using the claw. The games were quite competitive and challenging, but our drivers pulled through and were outstanding.
After these six rounds were up, our team name 'Girls Who Code' was called as one of the top three teams. We were amazed! It was a great moment for us as we realised we could achieve anything we put our minds to. After the shock sunk in, we played another game. Unfortunately we did not win, but came away with 3rd place under our belts!
Never did I think, seven months ago, we would have achieved what we did that day. However, we are proud of our robot, regardless of how we do in the competitions. It's been an amazing experience, and it's not over yet!
