Prep For Med 2022…Clodagh Holland

On the 23rd of March, a group of nine students took part in the UCC School of Medicine’s “Prep for Med”, an introductory course designed for Transition Year students. The course aims to provide young people with an insight into studying medicine at third level, specifically in University College Cork. During the event the organisers of the programme spoke to various doctors, students and lecturers, and detail what each individual does in an average day.

Two groups of UCC students were introduced, one a group of first year Medicine students, and the other a group of students currently in their second year of college. Both spoke about the content of their college course, and how they themselves made their way to UCC to study Medicine.

The next section of the course involved a group of doctors, who each spoke about their specialities. We were introduced to a Paediatrician, Women’s Health Specialist, Renal Medicine Specialist, Pathologist, Neurosurgeon and two newly qualified doctors, who had graduated from UCC recently.

The Prep for Med Programme was incredibly detailed and informative, and was a great help and resource to Transition Year students considering a future in Medicine.
