Law Day
Experiencing the World of Law…Saoirse Frank 4.2.
Monday ,February 7th was Law day for 4.1 and 4.2. Niamh Cronin ,a qualified barrister-in-law, provided us with an insight into the world of law . The highlight of the day was when the students ran a mock murder trial where each of them had a role as a solicitor, barrister, defendant, prosecution witness, defence witness, registrar or juror. This was a chance for them to put into action what they had learned throughout the day and was of course, full of drama!
We began the day by discussing the 2 types of law.,Civil Law and Criminal Law. Criminal law is when a person is being convicted of a crime/offence against someone else. Civil law covers nearly everything else!,from family troubles to disputes over property, with money aka damages being the main reason for many of the disputes. We briefly went through what a contract is and how it involves an offer, an acceptance of the offer and a consideration (which is the offer/bargain/exchange by each party).
Next we watched multiple scenes of a court case from the movie called 'A Time to kill' which features Sandra Bullock, Samuel L. Jackson and more.It was very interesting and helped to highlight the key features of a court case and how a case is performed, from the arraignment to the conviction.
