Aberdeen Angus “At The Heart of Life”

‘At The Heart of It’

As the finish line is in sight, the work doesn’t stop! The ‘At The Heart of It’ girls have been preparing for their interview with  representatives from: the Irish Angus Producer Group, ABP Food Group, Kepak Group and an Agricultural Science Teacher. This interview will take  place virtually on  Thursday,April 22 .

Preparation for this interview involves This work entails: working on our presentation skills, continuing work on our booklet, interviewing key agricultural figures in West Cork and marketing our group on social media, to name a few! We also organised a photoshoot with George Maguire from the Barn Studio. The photos from the shoot feature on our social media pages, and on our upcoming article on the “Southern Star “by Emma Connolly!

Before our Easter holidays, we also got our year group to cook a Certified Irish Aberdeen Angus meal at home. Turns out, homeschooling does have its benefits, Sacred Heart students were able to prepare an Angus dish and enjoy it with their families from the comfort of their own home! As a result, more people were able to enjoy the wonderful dish and taste the delicious tendered, marbled beef, that is Angus!

Many Irish teenagers, especially girls, don't get enough iron. This can lead to a sluggish feeling, affecting the ability to concentrate and perform at maximum capacity. Lean red meat should be included in the diet 3-4 times a week to retain adequate iron levels. Iron in meat is up to 7 times more easily absorbed than iron from most other foods. This shows the importance of including meat, like Aberdeen Angus ,in our diets and the important role it plays in our school community and society. Therefore,we from the ‘At The Heart of It’ group, pride ourselves on the work we are doing to promote Aberdeen Angus within our school and the wider community.

If successful in our interview, we hope to receive 5 Angus calves in September, rear them on Orlaith’s family beef farm in Reenascreena and start our journey on our research project. If not, we have thoroughly enjoyed our experience in the competition and would encourage future Transition Year students to enter as we have learned an abundance of life lessons, enhanced our communication skills from interviewing key agricultural figures in West Cork, gained information on the Aberdeen Angus breed, the Irish Angus Producer Group, processors Kepak Group and ABP Food Group and the agri-sector in general all while having a bit of craic!
