Trinity College Law Review
Every year Trinity College Law Review we invite students across Ireland to enter submissions for our Secondary Schools Essay Writing Competition. This year we are delighted to invite your pupils to participate.
The essay should be 1000 words max, and based upon one of the following headings:
1. Critically compare the use of the death penalty in Ireland, where it is banned, with at least one other jurisdiction in which it is applied.
2. With the creation of laws mandating medical face coverings, can governments, such as the French, justify a continued ban on religious face coverings such as the niqab or burqa?
3. In light of the recent Black Lives Matter movement in the US, discuss whether monetary reparations should be paid to historically oppressed minorities, and how this can be balanced with constitutional rights
4. Under Irish law, children’s identities are strictly protected from publication in the course of legal cases in which they are involved. In this context, critically analyse whether this rule strikes an appropriate balance between the child’s right to privacy and the right of the media to free expression.
The winner of the competition will receive a cash prize of €150, and will be published on our online legal blog, TCLR Online. An invitation will also be extended to attend the Launch Night of Volume XXIV of the Law Review, which is usually held in the Long Room Library of Trinity College, pending restrictions. All submissions should be sent to lawreview.trinitycollege@gmail.com, and should contain the student’s name and school. The deadline for submissions is Monday the 27th of January.
