Celebrating Achievement: Méabh O'Sullivan and Sarah Harte's Journey from Innovation to Inspiration
In the world of science and innovation, dedication and creativity often pave the way for remarkable achievements. Two such exemplary students from Sacred Heart, Méabh O'Sullivan and Sarah Harte, embarked on a journey of innovation during their Transition Year (2022/2023) that has not only left an indelible mark on our school but has also garnered national acclaim.
Méabh and Sarah, now 5th Year students, undertook a science project with a mission: to harness the power of cycling to charge mobile phones. Their device, designed and constructed, attaches to a bicycle and converts the mechanical energy from cycling into electrical energy, capable of charging a mobile phone. Through calculations involving time, distance, and power output, they determined the optimal cycling conditions required to charge a phone effectively.
However, their efforts did not stop at the prototype stage. Méabh and Sarah went further by surveying potential users about the practicality and desirability of their device. This feedback loop not only validated their concept but also provided insights into potential improvements and market demand.
Their hard work and innovative spirit did not go unnoticed. In a culmination of their efforts, Méabh and Sarah participated in the SciFest competition at MTU, where they not only won the Business Excellence award but also clinched the Climate and Delivering a Cleaner Future Award. These accolades propelled them to the national stage at the SciFest National Finals in November 2023, where their project stood out and earned them the esteemed Berlin Long Night of Sciences award. This is an experiential award — a trip to Berlin, generously supported by the Department of Foreign Affairs and organised by the Irish Embassy in Berlin. From June 20th to 23rd, Méabh, Sarah, and their teacher, Ms. Holland, were immersed in a series of enriching experiences. They were warmly welcomed at the Embassy of Ireland, where they engaged in insightful conversations with John Lynam, Deputy Head of Mission and Róisín Martin, Assistant Public Diplomacy Officer about the work that they do as well as being served pastries and tea in the beautiful Irish bone china.
Their itinerary in Berlin was as diverse as it was enriching. They explored historical landmarks such as the Topographie des Terrors and Checkpoint Charlie, gaining profound insights into Germany's past. Futurium provided them with interactive exhibits that sparked discussions on the future of our planet, while visits to the Brandenburg Gate, Holocaust Memorial, and Berlin Dom enriched their cultural understanding.
A highlight of their visit was the Long Night of Sciences event, where they participated in lectures and demonstrations at the University of Berlin, fostering a deeper appreciation for scientific inquiry and discovery. Additionally, visits to the Berlin Global Exhibition and the Neues Museum further broaden their horizons, offering glimpses into Berlin's global connectivity and ancient artefacts.
Méabh O'Sullivan and Sarah Harte's journey is not just a testament to their scientific prowess but also a celebration of curiosity, perseverance, and the transformative power of STEM education. Their achievements inspire our school community and beyond, illustrating the impact of innovative thinking and dedication to scientific inquiry. As they continue to explore new frontiers in science and technology, we applaud Méabh, Sarah, and Ms. Claire Holland for their outstanding representation of our school on the global stage.
Their journey reminds us all that with passion, creativity, and determination, anything is possible.
