Let's look at October

October 27th marked the end of the longest term of the school year. A particular well done to our new 1st year students on completing your first term in SHSS! We hope you enjoyed it.

  • Halloween Dress up day: A firm favourite in SHSS this year saw yet another spectacular effort by staff and students alike to attend school in their Halloween costumes. 2023 saw a lot of builders, several Men/Women in Black agents, some ‘Magic Mikes’, Smurfs, Chipmunks and even a couple of Oompa Loompas among many more costumes. Mr Woods and Ms McEvoy were very on trend this year coming as Ken and Barbie, Catherine donned a Where’s Wally Costume, Mr Peglar paid homage to his dog Messi with his costume and Ms Brosnan was a thief. Best dressed teachers were the group who came as I’m a Celebrity Campmates. Well done to the @studentcouncilshss for organising a table quiz in the GPR at lunchtime along with collecting money for Doctors Without Borders who are doing invaluable work all over the world.

  • Maths Week: The TY Maths teachers and students put on a superb week of fun and engaging maths games and puzzles from October 16-19. Students enjoyed a daily maths joke and puzzle with prizes awarded at the end of the week!

  • Debating: Well done to Ms Harte and all the TY students involved in the Concern Debates competition for a unanimous victory in their first debate this year. There is also a Debating club for 2nd and 3rd years with Ms Crowley every Monday in the Computer room. All welcome!

  • Happy Home Ec students: Ms Harte and Ms O’Brien have been keeping their students busy this term cooking, baking and sewing!

  • YSI: Well done to Ms O’Regan and her 5th year group ‘Red Light Green Light’ who were selected for the National Project YSI Elevate because of their All Ireland win last year! All the YSI groups for 2023/24 are now up and running and have several social media accounts you can find on our school Instagram page. Give them a follow!

  • Hockey: Ms O Callaghan, Ms McEvoy, Ms Russell and Clare Shorten have been busy training our school hockey teams this year and they have several wins under their belts. Great motivation to keep working hard as we head into the next term.

  • Mental Health Week: October 10th was World Mental Health Day so Ms Good, Ms Crowley & the Wellbeing Ambassadors organised a week of activities to promote positive wellbeing.

  • French Food Day: Ms Bell organised what looked like a delicious class filled with foods synonymous with France. Yum!

  • Junior Cycle Results: Well done to our TY’s on their excellent results. How fitting to see all their hard work rewarded!

  • Sports Day: October 4th was a day filled with excitement and enthusiasm as the entire school got stuck into Sports Day. From Frisbee to Zumba there was no shortage of activities but the most popular station was certainly the Icecream truck! Thanks to Ms Meade and the Student Council for organising.

  • Chess Club: Chess club continues to grow and new sets were purchased this term to keep up with the growing interest. They meet every Thursday and new members are always welcome!

  • 5th Year Bonding Day: Thanks to Mr Peglar for organising a day for the 5th years to get back to nature with their ‘Art of Nature’ activity.

  • Parents Association: The new Parents Association met Ms O’Regan on October 3rd to get set up for the coming year.

  • Rugby: Our Junior School’s team were in Musgrave Park this term and won four out of their five matches! Ms Kingston also took the Senior Students to a blitz where they won every match! SHSS Abu!

  • Open Night: What a turn out we had for this year’s Open Night. It’s always lovely to meet our new prospective students as they receive a tour of the school. We look forward to meeting you in September 2024!

  • Equestrian Interschools Competition: Ms Brennan and Clare Shorten accompanied the girls to Maryville where we had students competing in both individual and team competitions.

  • Grupa Ceoil: Ms Meade and several students have continued to meet for a Trad session every Friday at lunchtime. New members welcome!

  • LCVP class trip : 5th Year LCVP students visited Clonakilty Blackpudding Factory and Visitor Centre as part of their Enterprise Action Project with Ms Good and Ms O’Donovan.

  • Senior Music: Senior music students journeyed to Limerick on what was one of the wettest days of the year (and that is saying something!) to hear The Bach Cantata.

  • Gaelbratach: Our TY students have been very busy this term attending workshops in Cork and organising activities for students.

  • SciFest: Well done to Sarah Harte and Meabh O’Sullivan whose project was selected to compete at the SciFest 2023 National Final!

  • Career Guidance: Ms Sexton has been very busy this term bringing students to Limerick and Cork for Open Days and inviting speakers from MTU and UCC to speak to the 5th and 6th year students.

  • Green Schools: These students have been busy attending workshops and conducting surveys on how we can make our school a greener place for staff and students!

Wow that was a busy term! Looking forward to seeing you all tomorrow! 50 days till Christmas! #shss #aschoolforall #choosewell
