Camogie - SHSS v Coachford College
Sacred Heart Clonakilty 7-5 Coachford Community College 4-4
The second year camogie players of Sacred Heart started the week with a well deserved win over a gallant Coachford at Ahamilla. Having won the toss and electing to play with a stiffening breeze, team captain Cliona Harte wasted no time in opening her account with a sumptuous finish to the net following good build up play from Tara Hourihane and Fiona Walsh.
Soon after a familiar pattern took hold as aided by the strong wind and excellent build up play from Roisin Forristal and Andrea Whelton, Harte was on hand again to finish low to the left of the Coachford keeper’s despairing dive. Wing forward Hazel Nyhan got in on the act with two well taken points to extend the lead before Coachford opened their account with a point from play. At the end of the first quarter SHSS held a 2-2 to 0-1 point lead.
Further frees from Harte (2) were followed by a superb goal from the ubiquitous Hourihane. With the half back line of Clodagh O Keefe, Aishling Coakley and pivot Mairead Whelton dominating Clon added another goal from Harte after she was put into the clear by a driving run and accurate pass from Roisin Forristal. Right on the stroke of half time midfielder Leah Mc Carthy produced a great individual point following a determined run. Half time SHSS 4-05 Coachford 0-1
The second stanza was in marked contrast to the first as Coachford now enjoyed playing with the elements and the comeback was on following two quick goals within the first 5 minutes. Two points followed and after the 3rd quarter SHSS were hanging on to a seven point lead. The momentum though was all with Coachford and despite stern determined defending from Julie Cunningham, Ava Sexton and Marianne Keohane. Coachford added another 1-1 and the margin was down to three.
SHSS were pressed into action and in rare ventures up the field they scored majors on all occasions. One from Harte, a delightful second from Fiona Walsh and a third from Roisin Forristal. It was a case of “what we have we hold “ now for Sacred Heart, who ran out deserving winners and now look forward to a Semi Final following a promising display where all 23 players contributed to the victory .
