September Round Up

Wow what a month September has been and it has really flown by. Well done to our 1st years on their first month in SHSS and congratulations to our 6th years who have completed their last ever September with us. A few highlights from this month include:


Athletic achievements: 1) Olive O’Flynn on being selected to play for the Munster U18 squad. 2) Katelyn O’Donovan on winning a Gold medal at the National Weightlifting Championships 3) Lola O’Donnell for competing in the STIAC Gymnastics competition in Newcastle 4) Our 1st Year teams who had success with their respective clubs 5) Maisy Lyons, Ailbhe Byerly, Aoife White, Saoirse Gilmore 1st year students who have been selected to represent the West Cork Ladies U13 team. 6) Well done to Niamh, Eimear and Laura on their success in the Division 2 U15 Blitz with Cork! 


Science whizz kids: 1) Mr Peglar’s TY Physics class who completed ‘The Great Egg Drop Experiment’. 2) Ms Holland’s 6th year chemistry class who conducted ‘The Preparation of Ethyne Gas and Examining its Properties’ 3) The Transition Years who conducted the flame test as part of their chemistry module. 


Musical and dramatic achievements: 1) All our Transition Years who have been busy bees rehearsing for and preparing for this year’s school musical ‘Annie’. 2) Luisne Deiseach, 1st year, who had great success at Fleadh Cheoil na hEireann 2023. 3) Ms Meade’s trad group who meet every Friday to fill the music room with beautiful sounds. 4) The outstanding choir and musicians who played for our Opening of the School Year Mass. 5) The students who participated in a choral verse workshop as part of the Clonakilty International Guitar Festival 


Historians of the month: Our Transition Years who loved their JFK Forensics workshop. 2) Ms Russell’s History classes who learned about propaganda and used cookies to explore the work of archaeologists. 


Star bakers: Our Home Economics students have been extremely busy baking and cooking everything from soup to cupcakes!


Artistic achievements: Ms O’Connell’s 5th years who explored the town and considered local art forms. 


Environmental Activists: 1) Mr Barry’s TY Sustainability class who planted some chard in the school polytunnel. 2) Ms O’Callaghan’s 2nd years who conducted an experiment examining the air quality surrounding our school.


Student voice: All student voice members participated in a workshop where they reflected and planned for the year ahead. 


The highlight of the month: Friday 29th - our day off!
