SHSS Alumnae Link - Bethany Haigh

Welcome to SHSS Alumnae Link!

This is where we connect with past pupils and find out what they’re up to now.

This week we linked with Bethany Haigh who graduated in 2017.

Name and Position:

Bethany Haigh, final year Nutritional Science student, UCC.

Lives:

Cork.

Best memory of Sacred Heart:

My best memories in school were the TY Cappanalea trip, competing in the Schools Cross Country Championships and all of the sports days at Sacred Heart.

What were your favourite classes?

I really enjoyed most of my subjects in school, but my favourites were Chemistry with Ms. Galvin and German with Ms. O’Flynn.

Tell us about your career progression to date:

Upon leaving school in 2017, I started a nursing degree in the University of Limerick. I adored the campus, college lifestyle and my lectures .During this first year, however, after some weeks on placement, I realised it wasn’t my passion or the career I wanted to continue.

Following this decision, I took a year out of college to figure out exactly what I was really interested in and the career I wanted to pursue. It didn’t take long for me to realise what I actually loved, and this was food, nutrition and fitness.

Once I had figured this out, I applied for the course I am currently studying which is Nutritional Science. I will be entering my final year this September after completing a 6-month placement at Carbery Group in the Production Department as a Food Ingredients Intern.

To fuel my interest into fitness, I invested in myself and completed a personal training and group instruction course, this allows me to work as a personal trainer and fitness instructor. I look forward to using this qualification throughout my career alongside my Nutritional Science degree.

If you weren’t in the job you have, what would you be doing?

I really loved Art classes in school so I think I would be doing something creative, maybe a job in interior designing.

Advice you would give your teenage self:

I think I would tell myself not to stress or worry about the future, that its okay not to take the most straightforward path and you’re not expected to have everything.

figured out by the time you finish school.

Favourite quote or motto:

If not us, who? If not now, when?

What is your hidden talent?

Making the best lemon cheesecake!

Huge thanks to Bethany for taking the time to answer our questions.

See you soon for the next instalment of SHSS Alumnae Link!
