TY Law Day - 4.1 and 4.2 - Saoirse Frank

“Today was Law day for 4.1 and 4.2. We received a talk on what law is, the different types of law, and what that looks like first hand.

We began the day by discussing the two types of law: Civil Law and Criminal Law. Criminal Law is when a person is being convicted of a crime/offence against someone else. Civil Law covers nearly everything else! From family troubles to disputes over property, with money, aka damages, being the main reason for many of the disputes. We briefly went through what a contract is and how it involves and offer, and acceptance of the offer and a consideration (which is the offer/bargain/exchange by each party.

Next, we watched multiple scenes of a court case from the movie called 'A Time to kill' which features Sandra Bullock, Samuel L. Jackson and more.

It was very interesting and helped to highlight the key features of a court case and how a case is performed, from the arraignment to the conviction.

At the end of the day we were given a chance to put what we had learned into practice with a mock trial.

We held our own court case, with a jury, prosecutors, defendants, witnesses and a registrar. We had to perform each of out roles as if we were actually dealing with a case, which was an interesting and fun learning experience.

Overall, It was a great start to activity week for 4.1 and 4.2, and we cannot wait for tomorrow!”
