Fifth Year History Tour

Ms O’Donovan's 5th year History class enjoyed a fantastic tour today, complimenting the senior History course. The day began with a fascinating visit to the Michael Collins Centre in Castleview for an overview of Ireland's pursuit of Independence, 1916 - 1922. Then a visit to Woodfield where Michael Collins was born 132 years ago almost to the day (16th Oct 1890). From there, on to the scene of the Kilmichael Ambush, a prominent event in the War of Independence, and finally to the ambush site at Béal na mBláth where Collins was killed. Historian, Tim Crowley, accompanied them for the day sharing some of his vast knowledge of historical events and the human, and often tragic, stories of that turbulent time. Many questions were posed and answered, many "what ifs" considered, and plenty of food for thought for further historical discussion and research in the classroom.

Many thanks to Tim Crowley, to Teddy Lowney, the bus driver, and especially to the sun for shining brightly!
