Gratitude
Gratitude
When you look up the term gratitude it reads the quality of being thankful;readiness to show appreciation for and a return to kindness.
Gratitude isn't just saying thank you. It is a practise that we have to grow and nurture. It is about integrating it into your thoughts, words and actions.
We all know we should practise it but often gets brushed aside for more impulsive states like impatience, frustration and irritation.
Why use this as a tool? What are the benefits? In positive psychology research, gratitude is associated with happiness and increased well being. It increases empathy/compassion,lessens anxiety, and builds resilience. Gratitude increases dopamine production which can reduce anxious feelings and emotions.
How to practise?
Make a list. Think about what you can be grateful for. Record this in your RE/ SPHE copy perhaps.
Take a gratitude walk. Go for a walk and make a special effort to appreciate your surroundings. You might notice the blue sky, the flowers etc. Spend a few minutes focusing on each of your senses (sight, hearing, taste, and touch) to find new things you may not have noticed.
You can apply this to anything! Try it out!
