Kilkenny....the final stop to "Ireland's Ancient East"

Day 3 saw the tour of Ireland’s Ancient East move south to Kilkenny. The first stop was Dunmore Caves, a limestone cave particularly known for its rich archaeological discoveries and for being the site of a Viking massacre in 928. The girls climbed down 706 steps underground to see amazing geographical formations such as stalactites, stalagmites, columns and curtains. Ms Harrington even got a present of two tiny stalactites to bring back to school!

The final stop on the successful History/Geography tour of Ireland’s Ancient East was the iconic Kilkenny Castle. This medieval Norman fortress is perched high over Kilkenny town, overlooking the River Nore.
The girls were treated to an informative guided tour of the castle, learning about the Earls of Ormond (the Butler family) and their story. They marvelled at the fantastic restoration of the state rooms and learned about the various paintings that hung on the walls.
One girl compared the banquet hall to ‘something from Downton Abbey’.
The tour was a huge success and was very educational.

Many thanks to all the students and to Mr. Daly, Mr. Mulcahy, Ms. Bell and Ms. Harrington .
