Munster Championship victory for Senior Camogie Team
Sacred Heart Clonakilty 3-10
St Mary’s Nenagh 3-06
The senior camogie team entered competitive action for the first time this year when they made the long journey to Bansha to face a well touted Nenagh outfit in the opening round of the Munster Championship.
Shorn of a number of regular starters due to academic commitments and injury the west cork girls started brightly and had the first two scores on the board courtesy of the O Brien sisters, Daire with a free from distance and Eimear with a similar offering from play.
Nenagh enjoyed a purple patch popping over three quick minors, before Eimear O Brien outstripped the Nenagh cover to register a high class goal.
Nenagh stung into action responded almost immediately and it was now a case of ‘game on’. Katelyn Dinneen scored a close in free before 2nd year student Caoimhe Murphy tapped over after a great run. Nenagh replied as the short whistle approached to leave just one point.
Halftime Clon 1-5 Nenagh 1-4
The start of the second half saw Clon increase their lead with points from Katelyn and Daire as they began to get on top. Another from Eimear pushed the Carbery outfit into a 4 point lead and when the same player netted half way through the second half It looked good for the Clon girls.
Nenagh though are hard beaten and responded like the first half with a quick goal and point. 2-9 to 2-5 with 10 left.
Katelyn calmed the Clon nerves with a pointed free following a foul on Hannah Sexton before Jessica Mc Carthy pulled first time to the net following great approach play by Caoimhe Murphy.
With time running out Nenagh scored from long range to put a more respectable look on the scoreboard but it was a mere consolation as a more determined and skilful Clon outfit were already home and dry.
Sinead Mc Carthy was solid in goal and is a keeper with huge potential. Roisin Dullea was superb at full back with superb support in the corners from Alannah O Brien and Millie Condon, two 2nd years both making their senior debuts, and acquitting themselves admirably. The half back line of Kellie O Gorman, Captain Claire Kingston and Barryroe native Grace Tobin were solid throughout and repelled many a Nenagh attack.
The Midfield pairing of Daire and Hannah hurled an enormous amount of ball and covered every blade of grass on the Galtee Rovers pitch.
Meabh O Donovan Caoimhe Murphy and Katelyn were extremely effective and put in huge work over the hour while Jessica Eimear and Leanne Sheehy linked up well to keep the scoreboard ticking over at crucial times. Katie O Driscoll and Sarah O Donovan both played their parts when introduced.
